The frist WAKO World Cup of the year was being held on 23-24 January in Mareno di Piave (ITA) in the new and modern City Sports Hall. The number of the participants increases year by year. This time it reached more than a thousand competitors, what is a pretty good result for this young sport event. Keep it up!

On Saturday, „Touch Score” pointfghting team competition went on in 3 separated categories (women, men -73 kg and men +73 kg). Together almost 50 teams started fighting on five tatamis. Finally, at the end of the day, two teams stayed in action in every each category in the finals: Team BestFighter and KiralyTeam. First, Domenico „Mimmo” De Marco with Andrea Lucchese beat Laszlo „Gombi” Gombos and Richard Veres by 1 point on a very close and spectacular fight as always. After it, Marco Nordio and Giuseppe De Marco took the gold and the title in extra time from Krisztian Jaroszkievicz and me. What can I say? Marco and Giuseppe was being focused more than us and they looked fresher. Also was a close and exciting fight. On the last fight, Anna Kondar and Andrea Joni stepped onto tatami against Luisa Gullotti and Valentina Barbieri saving gold medal (also in extra time) for Kiraly’s. Score: 2:1 to BestFighter. Well done, guys!

On the other day, individual categories came. Nice fights again and many people in men’s weight categories, especially in 63, 69, 74 and 79. Drawing lists counted over 25 competitors in each. In 57, Manuel „Manu” Esposito confidently won it as this weight category’s world champion. In 69 and 74, Mimmo won both of them, beaten many good fighters. Mimmo seemed in the best shape during the competition. Who knows, how he did it, after a very busy year. Mimmo, what can you say about it? I’m interested :) For everybody’s surprise, from Nikos’s Memmos young greek team, talented Achilleas Foufounis was able to win 63. Watch out everybody! New year, new fighters again. They are coming up! In higher categories didn’t happen any surprise (maybe just Krisztian’s weight categories :) he won 89 and +89, as 84’s World Champion. He ruled it.

After individuals, open category started. Some probable winners withdraw it, because of injuries or problems with toughness, including Manu, Mimmo and also Andrea. But, finally about 25 women and 40 men started fighting for victory. Women’s finalists were Anna and Luisa. This time Luisa won after a high leveled fight. It was a nice victory. On men’s side, my mates, Gombi, Richi, Krisztian and me reached to final four and saved title for KiralyTeam.

My final conclusion of this event: at the beginning of the year, generally many fighters say, „it’s too early to compete”, „there will be enough competition this year” and „really big challenges just come in the future”. These are absolutely true, I could see many, many fighters out of shape (including me), what is not a real problem at this early time at all.

But, in my opinion, this competition or any other in this period, could help much better your shape than simply staying home to train.

In this case, you can fight a lot, get to feel competitions’ atmosphere back quicker, analyzing yourself in challenges… Think about it and share your opinion, too!
